What we know about Barcelona, Meta's Twitter alternative

[ad_1]

Originally, it was Mastodon. The social network of the Fediverse, at the end of last year, was one of the first destinations of exiles from Twitter. Those, in other words, who didn’t like the arrival of Elon Musk at the head of the platform founded by Jack Dorsey.

Over the last few months, in more or less periodic waves, they have emerged potential alternatives to the bird’s social network. The last, in chronological order, it’s coming right from Dorsey’s mind, the man who founded Twitter in 2006. Is called Bluesky and can be accessed only by invitation: in the United States, currently the main market for this application, an access link can cost up to 400 dollars.

However, the shortlist of possible alternatives to Twitter still lacks a rather important name. It’s about Halfthe company behind Instagram and Facebook, which had confirmed in March that it was working on a text-based social network, codenamed P92.

But what will this new app that Mark Zuckerberg intends to launch to occupy the space of the dissatisfied with the new Twitter be like?

P92 becomes Barcelona: here’s what we know

In recent weeks, some details have arrived. From first name which, as reported by the researcher and social network expert Alexander Paluzzicould be Barcelona.

In the image shared by Paluzzi also appears a launch date which is, however, to be considered only a placeholder: to date, there are no concrete indications about the debut. The concept behind Barcelona seems to be quite similar to that of Twitter, or Mastodon and Bluesky: a feed of mainly text posts, of up to 500 characters, according to what has been emerging in recent weeks. A bit’ an evolution of a function that Instagram launched some time ago, that of Notesto tell the truth without a particular success.

AND Instagram will be the starting point of the new social network, according to the first reconstructions. Meta’s idea is to link Barcelona to the platform founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, starting with the claim, which could be “Instagram for your thoughts” and the project supervision, entrusted to Adam Mosseri. To access the app, which will be distinct from the others in the Meta family, you can use your Instagram credentials, while also maintaining the same username and photo.

A decentralized, creator-focused platform

“We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text content,” a Meta spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider. “We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share updates that pertain to their interests”.

Starting from this statement, there are at least a couple of points to draw attention to. The first is the decentralized formula, the same as Mastodon and Bluesky. No specific details are known about how Meta understands this feature, which generally means a distributed network management, controlled by multiple servers and not by a single intermediary. What appears possible, however, is that the new app may be capable of communicate with the other platforms owned by Mark Zuckerbergespecially Instagram.

The second is the attention to creators and public figures, whose involvement is increasingly one of the main discriminating factors for the success of a social network. Well, to support the Barcelona project, as reported by The Information, there will also be the Sharing product group, the Meta division that deals with support projects for creators and influencers. A clear indication of the commitment that Mark Zuckerberg’s company intends to dedicate to the success of the project.
