From surgery to space: the new IIT Center for Robotics opens in Genoa

About 250 male and female researchers from all over the world are now working in the new Center for Robotics and Intelligent systems of the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, where “about 80% of the activity in the field of robotics” of IIT will be developed.

George Metta, scientific director of IIT, whom we interviewed on Italian Tech at the beginning of Mayrecalled that “IIT robotics has a total of 468 people, 80% concentrated in this center with the idea of ​​creating a critical mass” and that “the areas of application are personal care, such as exoskeletons for biomedical and prosthetics, the care and monitoring of infrastructure and the environment, like the robots present on the San Giorgio bridge (these, ed)and industry, through the development of robots which also takes place in joint laboratories with important Italian and international companies”.

According to what has been explained, the building that houses the Cris was born to host laboratories and testing facilities at the forefront for the study of robotics, with the different lines of research sharing a common space to foster collaboration and integration. The idea is that the new laboratories allow IIT to aim for more ambitious goals, “in the light of a renewed and stronger collaboration with the academic and industrial world”; moreover, the Cris will allow the experimentation in dedicated spaces, indoors and outdoorswhich simulate the operating environments in which the robots will eventually have to operate.

Also for this reason, the president of IIT, Gabriele Galateri of Genolapointed out that “today we are witnessing a leap forward in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence in our institute” and that “the work carried out in this new center will be able to concretely contribute to the development of the local fabric but also of the whole Village”.

Robots: from the iCub child to the HyQ quadruped

The inauguration of the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Systems was also an opportunity to take stock of the development of humanoid robots such as the famous iCub (now in its third generation)R1 and Alterego, which are expected to function as assistants for people in museums, healthcare settings, work settings or disaster-affected locations, or as the exoskeleton streamsused for railway maintenance.

Again: the Concert robotic platformto support people in construction jobs, the collaborative industrial robot Moca, for future manufacturing production lines, and the quadruped HyQ (This)which is part of the laboratory with the most quadrupedal robots in Europe.
