Unveiled the Nothing Phone 2: how it is made, how much it costs and where to buy it

“Our design is now iconic and we didn’t want to change or distort it, because we want people to recognize us”: he told us this, David Sanmartin Garcia, co-founder of Nothing together with Carl Pei, when we met him a few days before the presentation of the new Phone 2.

Which, as the name suggests, is obviously the second phone of what was a startup in 2021 and is now a full-fledged company: “In one year we are increased from 150 to 450 employees, of which a hundred dedicated only to software, we have absorbed the developers of OxygenOS (the software of the first OnePlus, ed) and we have sold 750,000 Phone 1s” Sanmartin told us again. Visibly satisfied, as it is understandable: 750,000 phones it is roughly half of what the first iPhone didand having arrived at a second smartphone is already a good achievement in itself, in a market in which very large companies (such as Amazon or Facebook) or potentially very promising companies (such as Essential) have been burned.

Comparison between Google Pixel 6A and Nothing Phone 1: which is better?

Nothing and the elephant (almost) disappeared

The new Phone 2, on presale from July 17 also in Italy (and also in the USA, unlike the first) hopes to repeat the success of the previous one. Obviously focusing on the most striking feature of the Phone 1: the back is still transparent and still full of LEDs, which light up when you receive a phone callcomes one notification or you connect the power supply but also can be used as a light for the camerato distinguish one contact from another or for other specific functions.

Nothing is betting on this, so much so that it has evidently invested time and money in this: the total number of LEDs is more or less the same as last year, but the strips that compose them are more, so as to allow greater variety in the switching on and off games; they can be used as a fill bar for a possible timer, to physically show how far is the Uber car from us just booked or how volume indicator if (for example) you are listening to music; and they also work like the notification led used to be, with one part that stays on in case of a missed call.

The design has not changed, but it has changed a little: the phone is slightly larger than the previous one, because the display goes from 6.55” to 6.7”, and to make it easier to handle, it has a rounded glass. Not the one on the screen, though: the rear one. It’s initially a little strange but pleasant and also helps the Phone 2 better defend itself against the accusations of being “a copy of the iPhone” that hit the Phone 1.

In general, the whole rear appears better defined and cared for, perhaps also thanks to the gray chosen instead of black of last year, which is most evident in the central coil of wireless charging. If you look after the silhouette of an elephanta characteristic of the Phone 1, is still there a little but less evident than before (the proboscis has been lost): it’s a pity, because it was a distinctive detail of these phones.

Nothing Phone 2, the technical characteristics

What’s not a shame is that the Phone 2 is improved in all fundamental aspects compared to its predecessor: the screen is not only bigger but now it is also of type Ltpo (things?)with variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz and reaches a peak brightness of 1600 nits; the battery goes from 4500 to 4700 mAh and supports fast charging at 45W (previously stopped at 33).

The operating system, which is based on Android 13, is the new NothingOS 2.0 and the processor is Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, combined with 8 or 12 GB of Ram and 128, 256 or 512 GB of storage space; 3 years of software update and 4 years of security patches confirmed. The photographic sector seems to have remained the same, with two 50 MP rear cameras (the second wide angle), even if the company has explained that it has worked a lot on new artificial intelligence algorithms and above all on a more advanced HDR system to capture 8 frames for each shot.

Nothing Phone 2, prices, versions and availability

As it is easy to imagine, the upgrades from a technical point of view (especially the display Ltpo and the new processor) have a cost that ends up being reflected in the final price to the consumer.

In Italy, the Nothing Phone 2 is available in two colors (white or gray) and 3 versions: 8/128, which costs 679 euros; 12/256, which is perhaps the most interesting and costs 729 euros; 12/512, which costs 849 euros. All can be purchased on the Nothing website (where there are also the new ones Ear 2 headphones in black), the last two also in the Wind Tre stores and on Amazon: the pre-sale starts on July 17th, the sale on July 21st.

The jump, compared to previous Phone 1, which started at 499 euros (and remains on sale), is 180 euros and on paper it seems justified: our test, which has been going on for a couple of weeks, will tell us whether this sensation is confirmed or not.
