Meloni: “The memory of the sinkholes for too many years the victim of a conspiracy of silence”. From FdI to Pd: “Never forget the tragedy”

Today Italy celebrates the Day of Remembrance and “pays its tribute to the martyrs of the sinkholes and to the Italians” forced “to abandon their homes and lands for the mere fact of being Italian. Hundreds of thousands of our compatriots forced to flee and who the nation, did not know how to welcome as it would have been right to do”. Giorgia Meloni in a message he recalls that “the memory of the sinkholes and the Julian-Dalmatian exodus has for too many years been the victim of a real conspiracy of silence. The Republic has mended this painful page of national history with the law n. 92 of 30 March 2004, which establishes the civil solemnity that we celebrate today and which commits the institutions to promote knowledge of those facts”.

In fact, today at the Quirinale we celebrate Remembrance Day. Yesterday the president of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, knelt in Basovizza to pay homage to the victims while the center-right asked that the Festival dedicate a remembrance to the memory of the Foibe, with the Minister of Culture Sangiuliano in the front row together with Matteo Salvini. Who in the morning clarified: “To commemorate the Day of Remembrance also in Sanremo, but above all that the tragedy of the sinkholes is always remembered by the Italians and taught in the schools. I leave the honors and burdens to Rai, but I hope that being an important day for millions of Italians should the Festival of Italian song dedicate a few seconds to this tragic page – – adds the deputy premier and minister of infrastructures – But it’s not that if something doesn’t happen in Sanremo it doesn’t happen, but since they’re talking about the whole human universe, this is Italian history”.

This is why, as Meloni explains again, he wanted to set up a specific coordination committee for the celebrations linked to this day at Palazzo Chigi, in order to guarantee more effective planning of the initiatives and ceremonies proposed and organized by the Administrations on the occasion of 10 February”. The premier continues:. “The thanks of the government go to the exiles and their descendants for the irreplaceable work of testimony and to all the associations, foundations, companies and committees that carry on the memory of those facts and work tirelessly on research, documentation and dissemination Our compatriots from Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia are ‘Italian twice’ and keep our flag in their hearts. Honor we have not forgotten you Martyrs of the Foibe”, the words of the group leader of the Brothers of Italy in the Chamber, Thomas Foti. “We preserve and renew the memory of all the victims, of the exodus of the Istrians, Fiume and Dalmatians from their lands and of the atrocious suffering inflicted by communist totalitarianism and the Tito dictatorship”, writes the Speaker of the Chamber on Twitter. “Cultivating memory is the only antidote so that tragedies like these never happen again”, comments the Minister of Culture in a tweet, Gennaro Sangiuliano. Also on social networks was the intervention of Francesco Lollobrigida, Minister of Agriculture: “Nobody tries anymore to tear out that page of tragic and criminal history. February 10, I remember”. For the Minister for Reforms, Elizabeth Casellati“the tragedy of the sinkholes represents the denial of the very concept of humanity. An endless horror that has been guiltily hidden and consigned to oblivion for too long”.

Reactions also from the opposition. “On the day of remembrance, let’s relive a tragic page of recent history, ignored for many years. Let’s commit ourselves to defeating any form of denial and indifference that generates hatred: to do this we must know the story and its events, keeping the memory intact”, the post on Twitter of the president of the senators of the Pd Simon Malpezzi. Laura Boldrini, a dem deputy, also speaks of “a dark page in the history of our country. In the face of these tragedies we must all be united in mourning and condemnation. No more horror”.
