The era of free-for-all social media is coming to an end. Zuckerberg follows Musk, but charging for a seal of trust may not solve the problem. Who’s going to stop trolls, scammers, crypto veterans and other characters who use it to pass themselves off as others from not buying it?

“If you are not paying for a product, then you are the product”: this is how an adage often quoted in recent years goes, also thanks to the success of social media, whose advertising business is actually based on our attention, with all the consequences that we have seen in the last decade. Like any Smemoranda phrase, however, this one too has limits, if only because that type of social media that seemed born to comment perhaps no longer exists. Or rather, it’s running out these days.
