La Russa: "The left has appropriated the values of the Resistance"

“In the Constitution there is no reference to anti-fascism”, says the president of the Senate. He calls for “national reconciliation” and assures: “On April 25 I will do something that will make everyone agree”. But in the meantime the opposition and the majority clash over the motions for Liberation Day

Ignazio La Russa says that “the problem is that the PCI and then the left appropriated those values“. Refers to the ideals of the Resistence, to what he sees as an embezzlement, as well as an indisputable reading. “This is a historical fact. And I have always opposed this”

The president of the Senate, a man of weight in the circle closest to Prime Minister Meloni, returns to talk about anti-fascism and resistance in an interview with Repubblica. And he does it not without polemical tones, when there are now only a few days left until April 25th. He calls for – as he often did – a “national reconciliation” and a “single reading” on the Constitution, at least as regards “the part of rights, democracy, participation and freedom”. He stresses that he “fully shares the values of the Resistance, seen as the overcoming of a dictatorship”. But he is also keen to underline (and above all) that a political party – the left – has exploited certain values.

The demonstration, according to La Russa, would be in the fact that “there is no reference to anti-fascism in the Constitution. Why? I simply believe that this happened under the pressure of the moderate parties who did not want to give this gift to the PCI and the USSR”. A no small statement, on which criticism from the oppositions arrived punctually this morning. A few days ago, he had defined the Nazis killed by the partisans in via Rasella as a band of semi-retired people, and even on that occasion there were harsh protests, but also the distancing of Giorgia Meloni, who had defined that statement as “an institutional grammar”.

“Whatever is said or done is exploited. And we always end up forced to pursue the controversy. So I also give up making comments, as happened in Israel”, defends the exponent of Fratelli d’Italia today, recalling Ginafranco Fini and says: “The fact that I married Fiuggi’s breakthrough speaks for me.”

In any case, it is unlikely that he will go to the streets with the Anpi on April 25, but he assures: “I’ll do something that everyone will agree on.” That agreement which yesterday was not found in the Senate chamber, always on the subject of Liberation, on the motions of the majority and the opposition. The document presented by the minority was voted on by the centre-right, while the opposite did not happen and the government parties went on the attack: “Shame”, they shouted in the Chamber from the benches of the majority. The word anti-fascism is missing, as is the reply from the opposition, while President La Russa called the senators back to appease the agitation. For the pacification desired by the number two of the state it will still take a while.
