The Prime Minister on the falling birth rate: “A robust policy in favor of families is essential to get out of the demographic glaciation”

We inherited the Pnrr from previous governments and the attempt to put the weight of wrong choices and delays on the shoulders of my executive is short of breath. Italians know very well how things are: Giorgia Meloni said it in a long interview with Il Foglio.

The premier then explained: We are working with the European Commission and intend to make use of all the means at our disposal to carry out the works and make the necessary reforms. The Pnrr suffers from the same problems as other instruments conceived before the change in the geopolitical scenario. We are in an economy of high inflation, rate hikes and war, no longer a post-pandemic emergency. The Pnrr has problems with the cost of the works – which have increased due to the rise in the prices of building materials, not just energy – and has an ideological approach which is affected by a certain top-down green transition which needs to be corrected route: it lacks pragmatism and to bring it into the Italian reality (as in that of other states) you need determination and calm, speed and weighting. It’s one thing to write it (somewhere, badly) at the drawing board, another to carry out the projects. In the end, reality knocks on the door and now in Palazzo Chigi there is a government that has not used that ink and would have done much more – argues Meloni -. We inherited it, we will do our best for the Italians. We told the EU Commission what we think and what we want to do, with a constructive spirit and a great sense of loyalty to the institutions we represent. We expect the same attitude from everyone, including the opposition who are attempting the impossible operation of overturning the omelette. The three priorities of the Pnrr? Actually one: do not lose money. And we – this we will do, bringing things back to their dimension of design and feasibility.

The month

The premier then talks across the board about various topics, starting with the Mes. The negotiations are underway and it seems clear to me that some European Union instruments need to be updated in the light of the new geopolitical scenario. The Mes was conceived when we were in another world and was not used even then. It’s a tool, not a religion, and tools need to be up-to-date, useful, and effective, Meloni says.

The drop in the birth rate

The premier intervened again on the case of the falling birth rate: What Italy needs is a welfare model that is adequate to the challenge of everyday life, capable of considering parenthood as an added value, not a burden or an obstacle, and that knows how to reconcile life and I work. A robust policy in favor of families is also essential to get out of the demographic glaciation in which we are living and which puts our nation, its social, social security and economic sustainability at risk. This is why we are strongly committed on this front.

The nominations

Meloni also specified his position on the appointments: The managers indicated (and for the first time there is a woman CEO of one of the large state-owned companies) at the helm of companies that represent the nerve centers of the nation are people with a vast experience, some have been reconfirmed, others come from successful entrepreneurial stories, our ultimate goal is the strengthening and development of companies.

The gas

Decoupling from Russian gas and then depending on China’s rare earths for electricity is not a wise choice, the transition must be gradual, without risky leaps forward. We are working with the European Union in this key, we have saved the endothermic engine and opened negotiations on biofuels, we are on the right track.
