Everyone has heard of ChatGPT, the new AI program. It is said that he can write lyrics as well if not better than humans. Optimists say it will usher in a new era of human-computer collaboration that will free humans from tedious and repetitive intellectual tasks. Pessimists fear that it will make humans obsolete and create mass unemployment. I don’t have clear ideas on the evolution of technology in the medium to long term and I think it’s impossible to have any. I will limit myself to a few reflections on the current situation, based on my experience as a professor of economic history at New York University Abu Dhabi.
