The Belgian government, which will assume the presidency of the EU Council in January 2024, has asked Enrico Letta, as president of the Jacques Delors Institute, to draw up a report on the future of the single market in autonomy and independence. The request was formulated by the European Council in the Conclusions of 30 June which read: “The European Council requests that an independent high-level report on the future of the single market be presented at its meeting in March 2024 and invites the next Council presidencies and the Commission to continue work on the matter, in consultation with the Member States”. The assignment should not provide for a fee and will be for a fixed term, ending in March 2024, with the presentation of the Report to the EU Council, the last one before the next European elections.

Responding to reporters, Letta said: “I’m looking for the magic formula to relaunch the single European market.” The news of the assignment triggered the reaction of Matteo Salvini and the league: «They lose the elections in Italy, they make a career in Europe. After Di Maio, Letta. Long live Democracy…”
