Clinic Chain uses Artificial Intelligence to create patient records

The US chain of clinics Carbon Health has introduced an artificial intelligence tool capable of automatically generating health records, based on conversations between doctors and patients.
As the tech news site The Register writes, if a patient consents to the recording and transcription of a doctor’s visit, the audio recording is transmitted to Amazon’s AWS Transcribe Medical cloud service, which converts speech into text. The transcript, along with data from the patient’s medical record, including recent test results, is passed to a template machine learning which produces notes summarizing the important information gathered during the consultation.
The software, called Carby, includes patient information and vital measurements, as well as a summary of medical records and diagnoses, in the virtual file.
Carbon Health CEO Eren Bali said the software is directly integrated into the company’s electronic health record (EHR) system and is powered by OpenAI’s latest language model, GPT-4.
Just a quarter of the time
Carbon Health said the tool produces consultation summaries in four minutes, compared to the 16 minutes it takes for a live, solo doctor. Clinics can therefore see more patients.
“Use of transcription software is standard in the healthcare industry, and most patients consent to their provider’s visit being recorded,” a spokesperson for the clinics explained.
