The President of the Republic, meeting the Ukrainian premier, will try to draw some conclusions on the chances of a ceasefire capable of leading to peace

Volodymyr Zelensky he certainly doesn’t need to question the Italian authorities to find out what they think of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since 21 February 2022, two governments (the Draghi one first and the Meloni one after) have given him continuous and concrete proof of solidarity. He did the same Sergio Mattarella, who found a way to harshly denounce in every speech who had triggered the conflict. therefore, it is unthinkable that tomorrow morning, receiving at the Quirinale, together with Foreign Minister Tajani, the colleague besieged in Kiev could deflect from this line of unconditional support. The meeting, which will precede a summit with the prime minister and an interview with Pope Francis, was born out of a three-way diplomatic effort – Palazzo Chigi, Farnesina and the Vatican – and will be behind closed doors. With a preliminary phase of listening, because the head of state wants to hear what he has to say, and above all to ask, Zelensky.

A sort of survey will follow through which Mattarella will try to draw some conclusions on the chances of a ceasefire capable of leading to peace. A just peace, of course, as he has repeated many times by now. The last time he did it was in the past few hours, during his visit to Oslo, which shares a 200-kilometre border with Russia, from where he returned during the night. Norway and Italy are united in the fight against the darkness that the senseless aggression of the Russian Federation on Ukraine seeks to bring to our continent… Russia’s decision was irrational in its motivations and behaviour, we therefore hope that elements of rationality will return to Moscow. Which for him translates into the search for a decisive point of collapse: how to arrive at peace.
