Valditara: stop to basic income for those who interrupt their studies

It is immoral to give basic income to those who have not completed compulsory schooling or to those who, despite having a high school diploma, do not work and are not engaged in training activities, «it is morally unacceptable: it would mean legitimizing and even rewarding a violation of law”. This was stated by the Minister of Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, who had the structures of the ministry he leads develop a research on young people aged between 18 and 29 who receive income. The study gave an outcome that the minister defined as “surprising and disturbing”, with respect to which he announced a proposal destined to raise controversy: either the gap is filled or the income is lost.
The study shows that in Italy there are 364,101 recipients of basic income in the 18-29 age group. Of these, 11,290 have only an elementary school certificate or no title, and another 128,710 only have a middle school certificate. «We believe that there should be an obligation to complete the school course for those who have illegally interrupted it or a professional training course in the case of people with a higher education qualification but not employed or engaged in training updates, under penalty of in both cases the loss of income, or of any welfare measure that will replace it from 2024 ”, observes the minister.
