The double game between Verdi and M5s

The road to the regional elections is not a walk in the park for the co-spokesperson of Green Europe and deputy of Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra Angelo Bonelli. A Bonelli who, not surprisingly, keeps repeating like a mantra that he won’t make agreements with Joseph Conte, but which is working hard “on a broad front against the right”. In the meantime, the broad front would be the one with the Italian Left of Nicola Fratoianni, with whom he is already allied from the start (only that Fratoianni, unlike him, does not show at the moment that he has any reservations regarding a closer relationship with Conte). And, given Bonelli’s insistence in showing himself cold towards the M5s leader, someone has begun to wonder if by chance the opposition also concerns other things (and other matches). And indeed there is more.

The second game is played away from the spotlight, in Brussels, where Conte is aiming, and not starting today (see interviews with El Pais and Der Spiegel last month), for an entry of the M5s into the European Green party, where, however, the idea of ​​opening the doors to the former premier m5s does not meet, they tell in the corridors of the EU, unanimous favour. In fact, if Philippe Lambert, head of the Greens in Strasbourg, has shown himself to be open, some perplexity has been expressed by some Green exponents who know Italy well, for example by MEP Alexandra Geese (who already in 2021 had openly said, at the address of the M5s, that the M5s itself “had done nothing for the environment”). Not only that: for now the European Greens, rather than the M5s, have smiled at the exiles of the M5s. And yet Conte continues to cultivate the dream, also thinking of the 2024 European elections, the year in which, according to his wishes, the M5s could achieve the electoral overtaking of the Democratic Party, after a rush to vote with the possible addition of the symbol of the European Greens. Which for the Bonelli green would be nothing short of dangerous, not to mention lethal (therefore better to differentiate yourself also in Rome, is the concept). And while Conte and Fratoianni are discussing the names of the possible candidate for the Regionals (Massimo Bray, for example) in the capital, Bonelli is trying to at least mark the territory of the future “programmatic sharing to be alternative and successful”. albeit in a disconsolate tone: “Unfortunately I note that the divisive logic that led to the victory of the right in the elections of 25 September has been reproduced”, he said a few days ago.
