The unemployment rate stops at 7.8 percent, inactivity drops to 33.6 percent. Female employment and the over 50s are doing well, permanent employees are increasing and fixed-term contracts are decreasing. April numbers

The unemployment rate in Italy still drops in the Istat numbers for the month of April: it stops at 7.8 percent, the best figure since June 2009 (if we exclude the period of March-April 2020, influenced by the first pandemic closures). An audience that, thanks to about 14,000 fewer unemployed, falls for the first time below the two million mark (1,986,000). But the good news also concerns the other two main indicators: that of employment, which rises to 61 per cent, and that of inactivity which drops 33.6 per cent.

A snapshot of the labor market in line with last month’s data, mainly driven by female employment, up by 52 thousand units on the previous month and by as much as 217 thousand on 2022. On the other hand, male employment decreased slightly, down by about 4 thousand units. Similar trends are also recorded for the inactivity rate: if it is slightly increasing for men in the 15-49 age group, it is decreasing among women and those aged 50 or over.

There is also important evidence on the contracts front: in fact, permanent employment increases by 74,000 on the March data and by 468,000 on the 2022 numbers. While forward contracts are reduced, 30 thousand units in March and 149 thousand in 2022.
