Ukraine, minimum wage, no to Piantedosi and Rome waste-to-energy plant: the (possible) convergence dossiers between Pd and M5s

The affirmation in the Pd primaries of Elly Schlein, the new party secretary, outlines some issues on which a convergence could be developed between the Dems, under the new leadership, and the Giuseppe Conte-powered Five Stars. They range from Italy’s position on the crisis in Ukraine, to that on the introduction of the minimum wage, to the pressure directed against the Minister of the Interior Piantedosi after the tragedy of migrants in Steccato di Cutro, in the Crotone area, up to the issue of waste, with the construction of a waste-to-energy plant in Rome. Conte welcomed Schlein’s election. “I will confront her,” he explained. But he also highlighted the difficulties that the secretary of “a party with an ancient tradition” will have to face. There is no mention of an alliance, of «measuring oneself against concrete objectives» yes.

Conte and Schlein took part in the demonstration called in Florence by the trade unions after the violence at the Michelangiolo classical high school, in defense of the school and the Constitution. “If we are here with the secretary of the Democratic Party – said the former Prime Minister – it means that we are here on concrete matches, which concern everyone, not just the progressive forces, we are in the streets to defend constitutional principles, the the problem is not the primacy and leadership of the left: we are interested in how the M5s work to strengthen the political action of progressive forces. If this dialogue strengthens this horizon with the new top of the Democratic Party, all of Italy is welcome».

Ukraine

The support for the Meloni government on the Atlanticist line of support, including military support for Ukraine, hitherto strongly guaranteed by the former secretary Enrico Letta, could weaken now that the party axis has moved to the left and closer to the positions of the M5s of Joseph Conte. A first test will be the vote on the motions that will accompany the premier’s communications to the Chamber on March 22 in view of the European Council. Speaking to the New York Times, in a correspondence from Rome that traces her profile as a “woman who is shaking up Italian politics” after being unexpectedly elected secretary of the Democrats, Schlein distanced herself from the position of the 5 Star Movement on Ukraine . She described her party as totally in support of Zelensky and his people against the “criminal invasion” of Russia and recalled that the Democratic Party voted to send arms again this year “because it is now necessary”.

Minimum salary

On the subject of the minimum wage, the leader of the Five Stars has opened up to opposition political forces (but not only). «We have presented a bill on the statutory minimum wage of 9 euros gross per hour, asking for it to be scheduled. Therefore – he underlined – we trust in all the political forces, starting with the opposition: the new secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein said it is a priority, Calenda has opened, now we are also addressing the majority forces ».

Migrants, pressing to push Piantedosi to resign

After the shipwreck of the boat loaded with migrants in Steccato di Cutro, in the Crotone area, both the Pd and the M5s asked Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi to resign. “We – Schlein said, speaking in the Chamber’s Constitutional Affairs Commission during the minister’s hearing – are confidently awaiting the results of the investigations, but from the point of view of political responsibilities, I agree with what my colleagues have said, your statements alone already suggest his resignation and a profound reflection for Giorgia Meloni”. The group leader in the Chamber Deborah Serracchiani filed an interpellation not only with the owner of the Viminale, but also with Salvini and Giorgetti, who report to the Coast Guard and Guardia di Finanza: in the inspection document, precise questions are asked to clarify where the breach in the chain of command that led to the catastrophe occurred. Even the Five Stars are asking for a step back from the minister. “Given the evident incompleteness of the ministry’s behavior, I reiterate the request for your resignation and to come urgently to report to the Chamber,” said Stefano Colucci, M5s member of the same commission. On Tuesday 7 March, Piantedosi will report to the Chamber in court. The hypothesis of a motion of no confidence in the minister, who has now returned, could come back.
