The escalator was abolished in July 1992, but not in all of Italy. Until a few days ago, in fact, the 70 deputies of the Sicilian Regional Assembly (Ars) could benefit from the automatic salary adjustment to the cost of living calculated by Istat. A mechanism, envisaged since 2014, which would have allowed the members of the Sicilian parliament to increase their gross allowance of 11,000 euros by 890 euros in 2023. Now that automatism has been suspended for the next four and a half years by the Ars.
The controversies
On the other hand, the news, which can be inferred from the assembly’s internal budget, had not failed to arouse controversy regarding the, at least political, opportunity to raise the salaries of deputies. In fact, Italy is third last in the Eurozone for the increase in hourly wages: a figure which, combined with galloping inflation, translates into a significant erosion of the purchasing power of many families. Nonetheless, central banks continue to call on the social partners to moderate their negotiations on pay increases to avoid triggering an endless race between wages and prices. Politics should lead by example.

The aforementioned downsizing of the budget is part of the virtuous path of reducing the expenses of the regional parliamentary institution which began with the 2013 financial year, reads the report of the college of quaestors.
