The M5S mobilizes for the June 17 demonstration in Rome. It will be dedicated to precariousness: “It will focus on that piece of Italy that the centre-right ignores”. But who turns up their noses

“The goal is to bring from three to five thousand people to the demonstration”: the Movement is preparing the big return to the streets, with pragmatism. And some difficulties: the numbers of the past are far away and so to set up the stage a large square is better than a square. To finance the event, money is needed and some parliamentarians turned up their noses so as not to have to dip into their wallets. Meanwhile, the days go by and the Five Stars are finalizing the lineup and organization of the demonstration against precariousness which will take place in Rome on June 17th. “It is a square against the government, which will have at the center that piece of Italy that the center-right ignores”, say the starred. The stage will be in Largo Ricci, a few meters from the Hotel Forum, in the Fori Imperiali area, but the event will start from Piazza della Repubblica. Places not like oceanic crowds as in the past, but more contained. Capacity similar to that of Piazza Santi Apostoli, already the backdrop for some M5s demonstrations, but this time “the decision to arrive at the Fori stems from the desire to make a march, to give a sense of community, as was the case for the basic income”, starry sources explain. At the time of Perugia-Assisi, it was 2017, the M5S brought 50,000 people to the streets, today, they say, “it is a restart”.

The focus of the Roman event will be precariousness, declined in various aspects: job precariousness, environmental precariousness, housing and war-related precariousness. The protagonists on stage? Ordinary people, who will tell their own story “to give a voice to that Italy that doesn’t have the chance”. The declared mission is to recreate a sense of community, but involving a new slice of the population “which is also the one that probably doesn’t go to vote”, as they underline in the Movement.

The car started. Albeit with some internal controversy. MPs have been activated to mobilize the base and organize buses. There are those who complain about the request to subsidize the means and those who minimize: “If someone has contributed, it has done so spontaneously”. Buses are planned from half of Italy and there will also be a dedicated “line” on the Roman coast, from Civitavecchia to Rome. This is the first post-administrative M5S event, even if the Movement strongly underlines that it is “open to all, especially to the world of associations with which we are in close contact”. New faces, therefore, and consequently big names of the old guard in mothballs. In short, the starred try to restart and widen the shirts at the same time. The only unknown factor, despite the location of the event being opposite its Roman “base”, which has always been at the Hotel Forum, is the presence of Beppe Grillo. The guarantor, who also participated in a meeting with Giuseppe Conte, Pasquale Tridico and the parliamentarians, as usual dissolved the reservation at the last minute.
