The court of Ministers has closed the investigation against the former premier Giuseppe Conte and the former health minister Roberto Speranza under investigation in Bergamo for manslaughter and culpable epidemic for the management of the early stages of the pandemic. The decision comes after the Brescia prosecutor’s office had asked for it to be dismissed and after the two politicians under investigation had defended themselves before the judges.

The decision of the panel chaired by judge Mariarosa Pipponzi came after the hearing behind closed doors on May 10 in which the defenders of Conte – lawyer Caterina Malavenda – and of Speranza – professor Guido Calvi and lawyer Danilo Leva – had presented the contrary reasons to the charges.

“First of all, it must be said that the documents completely lack proof that the 57 people indicated in the indictment, who allegedly died due to the failure to extend the red zone” to the municipalities of Alzano Lombardo and Nembro, in the Bergamo area, “are among the 4,148 deaths in excess that there would not have been if the red zone had been activated» reads the provision with which the Court of Ministers in Brescia dismissed the former premier Giuseppe Conte and the former health minister Roberto Speranza.
