The European Parliament had proposed bringing forward the period from 23 to 26 May, but no agreement was found. The solution will be formalized in the next European Council

The next European elections will be held from 6 to 9 June 2024. This was decided by Coreper, the Council of Permanent Representatives of Governments to the European Union. In the first instance, the European Parliament had proposed to bring forward the call to the polls to 23-26 May, also in 2024, but an agreement was not found between the member countries. As is customary, elections are held in all EU countries over a four-day window, from Thursday to Sunday (each individual country regulates when polling stations are open, whether for a single day or two). The electoral system is the proportional one, with the countries divided into large macro-districts (in Italy there are five). In our country there are 76 representatives who are elected to the European Parliament.

“There is satisfaction with the finalization of the important institutional step and with the solution identified”, Italian diplomatic sources said after yesterday’s decision by Coreper. Now the choice will be formalized in a forthcoming European Council, perhaps already the one scheduled for 22 and 23 May next.
