The first explanation could simply be a different way of opposing the Third Pole compared to the Pd and the M5s, which instead announced street protests against the maneuver. A constructive opposition, in short. At least this is the reading Matteo Renzi, the other leader of the federation between Action and Italy alive, gives it: «While the Five Stars and the Democratic Party want to go to the streets to defend the citizen’s income, we want to defend work and the public accounts. We presented a countermaneuver and the fact that Calenda asked Meloni for a meeting to explain it to him is not a mess up but an act of institutional respect. The opposition is made with proposals, not with slogans». Meloni herself, when she was in opposition to the Draghi government, met the premier more than once to illustrate the proposals of the Brothers of Italy. Proposals that have sometimes also been absorbed by Draghi in his provisions.
The Third Pole has no interest in entering the perimeter of the majority
On the other hand neither Calenda nor Renzi have, at least in this political phase, the interest in entering the perimeter of the majority (“I am the one who brings governments down and Conte knows something about it, in my opinion this government may not overcome the of 2024», it is no coincidence that the former prime minister teases): the Third Pole does not have the numbers to be decisive and its political project remains that of disrupting the existing weak bipolar system or, alternatively, to disrupt the Democratic Party by aiming for division between dem reformists and the left in order to lead the area of the anti-M5s opposition.
The relationship between Meloni and Forza Italia
On the opposite front, Meloni is well aware that Forza Italia, numbers in hand, cannot be replaced by the centrists of the Third Pole. But of course, faced with the fibrillation of the Azzurri (down in the polls, like the League, in favor of the Brothers of Italy) on the budget law, the premier also wants to send a message in view of the votes in the Chamber.
