“Support for Ukraine is right, we are only concerned about the use of ever more powerful weapons,” said Massimiliano Romeo of the League as he left the Senate. The leader of the Carroccio group at Palazzo Madama says he shares the government’s line of support for Kyv but warns: “The more we go on, the more the risk of escalation grows”.

Shortly before, in the Chamber, Romeo had announced the favorable vote of his group, but expressed “strong concern about how things are going on the front of the war between Russia and Ukraine”.

Romeo himself had expressed very similar positions in January during the vote on the decree for sending new weapons to Kyiv. “You can’t defeat Putin,” he said then. About a month later, precisely on the day of the premier’s visit to Kyiv, and with at least curious timing, the Northern League group leader repeated to Il Foglio: “Dear Meloni, we are hostages to warlike propaganda”.
