The Catholic question, the extraneousness, the tiring return from vacation. Thus the meaning of words, the weight of history and the importance of political cultures influence the secretariat

For many years observers – or at least that small part of them not entirely persuaded by the idea of having passers-by elect the top of a party, with the so-called “open primaries” – wondered what would happen if one day the famous “outsiders”, so chased and pampered since the time of the first experiments of Achille Occhetto’s PDS, had chosen a perfect stranger as their secretary. Now we know. The problem is not that Elly Schlein has in the past expressed positions in contrast with the choices made by her party at all levels, from international politics to local administration, from civil rights to waste: it is physiological for a new leadership group to make a change to the political line followed up to that moment (and it is equally physiological for the new leader to adapt on some topics). The point is that here there is no new management group and no turning point, for the simple reason that the real winners of the last congress were the outgoing secretary, Enrico Letta, director of the entire operation that brought Schlein back to the Democratic Party just in time to get her nominated, and Dario Franceschini, who hasn’t lost a congress since 2009 (and only because he was the candidate in 2009, which made it technically impossible for him to side with the winner). It is no coincidence that the only two positions of any value for a party located in the opposition went to them: the group leader in the Chamber, Chiara Braga (to Franceschini) and the group leader in the Senate, Francesco Boccia (to Letta).
