For the Italian premier, having invited the Ukrainian president to Paris without involving the European allies risks undermining the compactness of the continental front

It is a real diplomatic clash, not the first between Italy and France since the center-right government was born. For Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the invitation of the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to Paris was “inopportune”. The Italian premier spoke before participating in the work of the European Council in Brussels. “Our strength is unity,” Meloni said, criticizing French President Emmanuel Macron for the invitation which, according to her, would undermine European unity. There are moments in which internal political issues “risk to the detriment of the common cause” in Europe, Meloni said.

Meloni strongly underlined his criticisms of the choice of the French president: «I understand internal political issues, the fact of favoring internal public opinion, but there are times when favoring one’s own internal public opinion risks going to the detriment of the cause and this seems to me to be one of those cases». And then the prime minister reiterated her support for the Ukrainian cause: “Italy continues to be fully committed” to supporting Ukraine with a “all-round contribution. In addition to the issue of respect for international law, respect for the sovereignty of the nation, the Ukrainian conflict directly involves us. the best way to build an option for peace and dialogue is to keep the forces in the field in balance: all-round support for Ukraine is the best way to reach a possible negotiation. Italy will continue to support Ukraine today and intends to play a leading role in possible future reconstruction”.
