The peace and Ukrainian flags will be flown in the primaries of the Democratic Party.

The idea of accompanying the vote for the next secretary with rainbow flags comes from the presidents of Arci and Acli, Walter Massa and Emiliano Manfredonia, who put it in black and white in a letter sent to the two candidates for the secretariat, Elly Schlein And Stefano Bonaccini. The letter recalls the anniversary of the war in Ukraine, today February 24, and the dem are invited to remember it with the flags displayed in the polling stations where they vote.

An invitation that the dem welcome but not without caution. Failure to mention the Russian aggressor and the Ukrainian resistance brings the outgoing dem secretary Enrico Letta to present an amending proposal: the flag of peace is fine, but that of Ukraine should also be next to it. “Alongside the flags of peace in the gazebos, we ask our militants to place that of Ukraine alongside, to symbolize the commitment of the democratic community in support of every peace initiative and always on the side of the attacked”. Having made this change, it is a “beautiful idea”, according to Letta.

“I fully agree with the choice of the secretary Enrico Letta to put the two flags of peace and of Ukraine at the polling stations for the primaries of the Democratic Party on Sunday 26 February”, underlines the candidate for the dem secretariat, Stefano Bonaccini: “It is necessary to strengthen the diplomatic channel for a just peace”, adds the president of Emilia-Romagna.

From the Schlein area is Marco Furfaro to accept the proposal of Anci and Acli. No reference to the Ukrainian flag, but Furfaro also recalls that it would be “a political initiative to reaffirm solidarity with the Ukrainian people, for the ceasefire and to ask for the withdrawal of Putin’s troops”. In short, nothing “rhetorical”. On the other hand, recalls the national spokesman of the Schlein motion, “in our circles the flag of peace is present almost everywhere, but it is right to ensure that it is also present at the polling stations on Sunday, especially one year after the invasion of Russia in Ukraine”.
