The San Carlo affair gets complicated. After the ad hoc rule passed by the government, to free up the seat of the Rai top management, the former CEO Carlo Fuortes – who resigned from the state company and was already considered the successor in pectore of Stephane Lissner – put your hands forward. She withdraws, without having actually received any invitation, and in the absence of any expression of interest.

But, in view of the hard dispute already announced by the French superintendent forced out of the Meloni government almost two years in advance, Fuortes announces in any case that there are no conditions to be catapulted to the top of the Neapolitan opera, the oldest theater in Europe.

“The appointment of the superintendent of San Carlo cannot in any way be distorted, be or appear biased, as the city and national news of the last few weeks have unequivocally highlighted. Given this situation – underlines Fuortes – there are no notice the conditions to cover the role of superintendent of the Teatro San Carlo”.

Fuortes has already directed the Lirico di Bari (until 2013) and the Rome Opera (until 2021). After Rai, he would not have disdained the job at La Scala: but it was the mayor of Milan who blocked his way, with an increasingly explicit stop as the weeks went by, Beppe Sala. And the hypothesis of landing at the Florentine Maggio had also faded, all that remained was the Naples opera house: at the helm of which the superintendent Stéphane Lissner would only expire in 2025. Too much, for the Meloni government. Which established by decree the “retirement” of the directors of opera foundations, as established for Italian directors, at the age of 70, which Lissner completed last January.

A law built around the table to trigger the risk of vacancies in Rai. And against which the French superintendent had already announced, in black and white, a tough legal battle. Indeed, a pool of lawyers has been at work for days to assert Lissner’s arguments, “in all venues”. That’s why Fuortes intends, at least for now, to dispel any doubts about the possibility that Naples will become his comfortable and temporary airstrip.

“It would be an extraordinary pleasure and honor for me – the former RAI CEO began – to be able to lead the San Carlo in Naples and contribute to enriching the grandiose artistic and musical history of the oldest and most beautiful theater in the world. For almost three hundred years this theater represents the history of the Italian Opera. And its noble tradition has continued up to the current management of Stéphane Lissner”. He adds further: “But a theater like the San Carlo is not just a place for entertainment, art and culture. For the city of Naples, although rich in a vast and invaluable cultural heritage, it is perhaps the most symbolic and identifying place. It must therefore be treated as such: with the attention and respect due to a large public institution.And, by extension, the superintendent who leads it must have widespread and shared support from the whole community, which is the real owner of the theater and to whom we must answer”.

Words dictated, most likely, also by a concrete consideration. Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, who leads the San Carlo Steering Committee, has referred the matter to the municipal lawyers. If there is a dispute, it will be necessary to wait for the outcome of that legal dispute. No certainty, therefore, on the duration of the battle (which would also follow the emergency procedure). And Fuortes knows that the mayor of Naples would not force his hand on the times.

He then concludes: “The appointment of the superintendent of San Carlo cannot in any way undergo distortions, be or appear biased, as instead the city and national news of the last few weeks have unequivocally highlighted. Given this situation, in my opinion there are no the conditions for holding the role of superintendent of the Teatro San Carlo”.
