Salvini and the solution for high rents: “An ad hoc division”. But in his ministry it is already there

ROME. From Milan to Rome, the protest of university students against the increase in rents is mounting. But Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, who has the issue “at heart”, because “it is that of workers, students, office workers”, assures that he already has the solution in his pocket: “In my ministry – he announces at the end of a meeting with the unions – there will be an ad hoc Management». In short, a structure that takes care of tackling the problem, which “is that of construction, of rents”. It is a pity that this “ad hoc direction” already exists in his ministry.

It is called the “General Directorate for State Building, Housing Policies, Urban Redevelopment and Special Interventions”. It was established by the Conte II government in 2020 and has many tasks including that of adopting “measures aimed at tackling housing deprivation”. The real problem, if anything, is that the Meloni government has not allocated anything to the “National Fund for Supporting Access to Rented Housing”. Salvini’s predecessor, Enrico Giovannini, in the last months of the Draghi government had increased funding for 2022 to 330 million euros. The government changes and priorities change: the Ministry of Economy led by the Northern League Giancarlo Giorgetti, in the budget 2023, did not allocate anything either to the “Rental Fund” or to the “Inculpable Defaulting Tenants Fund”.

In short, Salvini will not only have to find in his ministry the rooms in which the General Directorate that deals with rentals has been working for three years, but he will also have to ask “his” Minister of Economy to put a hand on his heart too. And the other, perhaps, on the wallet.
