Work began today for the construction of the Florence high-speed bypass which includes the railway under-crossing of the city and the new Firenze Belfiore Av station. Matteo Salvini, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructures and Transport, Eugenio Giani, President of the Tuscany Region, Dario Nardella, Mayor of Florence, Luigi Ferraris, CEO of the FS Italiane Group, and Carlo Luzzatto, CEO of Impresa Pizzarotti C were present.

The Florence Av bypass is a work carried out by the Infrastructure Pole of the FS Group which, through the railway underpass of the city, will allow a separation of the flows between regional and high-speed trains, increasing the capacity of the surface network for the benefit of the local traffic, and will eliminate any interference between the two different types of service. The new Firenze Belfiore Av station will also be built together with the underpass. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana is the client of the work, while Italferr has been assigned the management of the works, for a total investment of approximately 2.7 billion euros.

Crucial knot

After the milling machine has been turned on, excavation is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2023, during which the construction works for the Belfiore station will be carried out simultaneously. Completion of the work is scheduled for 2028. “The Florence node represents a crucial link for collective Florentine and national mobility”, said Luigi Ferraris, managing director of the FS, observing that today “any technical problem on the Florentine node produces heavy effects on national railway traffic, as we have recently seen”, and for this reason “it is important to separate train flows as much as possible”.
