Two tunnels of 7 km each (connected to each other with safety bypasses every 500 metres, between the Campo di Marte station and the Viale XI Agosto area): thus the railway link will change the mobility of Florence and half of Italy: in fact, it will also affect the Tyrrhenian high-speed train. Because, with the works started yesterday - with completion expected at the end of 2028 - the journey times of the high-speed trains that currently stop at the Santa Maria Novella station will be shortened (currently a Frecciarossa connects Rome to Milan in no less time to 3 hours and 8 minutes, with intermediate stops).

Time saving up to 15 minutes

by how much? In the cost-benefit analysis of the Florence high-speed undercrossing project of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, it is highlighted a unit benefit of 15 minutes for each journey as indicated by Rfi as the probable speeding up of trains stopping in Florence. In more detail, the trains that will stop in the new Belfiore station will save about 10-12 minutes, those that will not stop will arrive in 15 minutes (thanks to a total investment for the work of approximately 2.7 billion euros: Rete Ferroviaria Italiana the client of the work, while Italferr was assigned the direction of the works).

The times of the works

To achieve the goal of completing the works by 2028, around 400 people a day are expected to work on sites at full capacity, with the milling site operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
