The president guarantees victory for Bonaccini in Campania, but the result is useless. Schlein conquers the cities: victory in Naples, Caserta and Avellino. The Neapolitan Marco Sarracino towards the national secretariat

Of Simon Brandolini

If you want to be quirky, it is not the first time that Vincenzo De Luca loses a congress, it already happened when he supported Maurizio Martina and not Nicola Zingaretti in 2019. But the Campania governor was still in his first regional presidency. And above all, no one, absolutely no one, in Campania was talking about a third term. Now the stakes for De Luca (and him) are much higher. And Elly Schlein’s victory, which the former mayor of Salerno did not support, puts a brake on his personal ambitions. So much so that while the agencies record the greetings of the whole party to the new secretary, De Luca’s no comment arrives from Campania.

The third term

Why? Between the two candidates for the national secretariat, one of the most evident differences was recorded precisely on the hypothesis of the third term loudly requested by the Campania governor. In the face of a possibility Stefano Bonaccini, Elly Schlein 24 hours after the democratic consultations, last Saturday, had closed the door: Yesterday evening Bonaccini in Naples opened for the third term for De Luca, I wonder if this is his idea of change. Change is not announced, it is actually practiced. Stop, done. Not to mention another much more political aspect: in Campania the current majority was a small minority until yesterday.

Change the majority

In Campania it was all (or almost) against very few. That is, the big names, the real notables were all with Bonaccini: regional president, parliamentarians (including the national deputy group leader Piero De Luca, responsible for the motion of the Mezzogiorno forum), councilors and former regional councilors, municipal group. In addition, the vice president of the European Parliament Pina Picierno in ticket with the governor of Emilia. In the primaries of the members Bonaccini had won, but not in Naples, in the city Schlein had obtained more support. And so Marco Sarracino, outgoing Neapolitan secretary, deputy as well as coordinator of the organization of the motion had won. Schlein in Sunday’s primaries won again in Naples, but also conquered Avellino and Caserta. The city where membership fraud was denounced, 3,000 registrations canceled despite appeals and stamped papers. Obviously not a coincidence.

The new Pd

The new secretary says she is always against the powers that be, against currents. A bit, indeed, like all previous leaders until proven otherwise. But having brought a piece of civil society back to the vote also means a strong request for change. So much so that in the corridors of the new Nazarene there are already rumors that the group leaders but also the deputies will miss out. including DeLuca Jr. And that Marco Sarracino will be the organization manager in the new secretary.
