The first reaction was silence and then, one voice after another, the internal minority began to make itself heard. Amazement, surprise, disappointment. Widespread discontent, destined to grow in view of the next national direction. Elly Schlein’s new secretariat cripples currents and redesigns the party in the image and likeness of the leader and it is understandable that not everyone is happy.

The «big names» of the reformist Base and the Young Turks, which they had supported at the congress Stefano Bonaccini, remain covered for now. But behind the very first lines the “old” Pd is boiling. Catholics suffer, kept out of button rooms. The reformists grumble, due to the evident shift of the rudder to the left and because they think that Schlein has not reciprocated the sense of responsibility they have shown by accepting unitary management. And if Bonaccini does everything to appease him and prepares messages of unity and peace, the dem parliamentarians quietly say that there would also be some discomfort for the leader’s first moves in the area of Dario Franceschini.

The first criticism concerns the decision to announce the 21 members of the secretariat on Instagram. “Schlein did it on his profile and not on that of the Democratic Party”, scolds a deputy and reveals the fear of her colleagues: “Elly is playing the game of her personal profile, but there is the risk of excessive personalization, the Democratic Party does not need a single woman in charge”. The moods are (also) these.

Lorenzo Guerini, after criticizing the leader’s choice to replace the group leaders, “political forcing”, is not exposed for now. However, Enrico Borghi, a point of reference for the reformist Base, speaks. The senator and member of Copasir recalls that the Democratic Party “is the only party that has resisted the personalization of politics, to the point that Veltroni and Renzi have even undergone splits». His concern is the party model: «It is not clear what role we attribute to the Democratic Party. Problems are not solved with the vagueness of rhetorical artifice and a movement party risks vanishing quickly. The novelty of the proposal is not enough, the solidity of the action is needed». And that’s not all, because Borghi, who was in charge of security under Letta’s management, fears that Schlein’s Democratic Party will neglect crucial issues such as defence, intelligence, interiors and security: «In the secretariat the box remained empty, but we cannot think that these issues are the prerogative of the right”.

Paola De Micheli, the former minister at the congress challenged Schlein, Bonaccini and Cuperlo, at thehuffpost he declares that in the new secretariat “there is a lot of movement and little partying” and that “Catholics are not represented”. In short, she hoped for greater openness to the various components and the same state of mind would Gianni Cuperlo, because the leader did not recognize “the richness of differences”. For Marco Carra, dem regional councilor in Lombardy, excluding Cuperlo was “a mistake, which deprives our secretariat of one of the most authoritative and most appreciated leaders that the party expresses today”.

Among those who would have liked more sharing and pluralism also takes sides Alessia Moranione of the exponents of the Bonaccini area who were not convinced of the unitary management: «I was expecting a secretariat more in keeping with the articulated result of the congressin which the base of members chose Bonaccini and that of the primary Schlein ».

Obviously the criticisms also concern the names of the chosen ones starting with those loyalists, such as Igor Taruffi and Marta Bonafoni, who have recently joined the party. And there are those who consider it contradictory to entrust the responsibility for the environment to Annalisa Corrado, an engineer, who is against the waste-to-energy plant that mayor Roberto Gualtieri considers indispensable for Rome. As for Schlein, she took a few days off for a short vacation and certainly on her return she will continue despite internal complaints, convinced that she has “talked to everyone” and respected the agreements with the minority.
