There is a new economy of beauty also linked to sporting successes: the feat of Spalletti’s team will give a further boost to the image of a city that already hosts films and TV series

Calculating how much the Scudetto, the third in its history, can be worth for Naples is a complicated thing. Of course, if we think of all those who have sold the ribbons that have colored the city, the shirts with the players’ numbers, even the not exactly official ones, the bill goes up. The only certain number concerns the team: winning the Scudetto is worth around 22 million euros.

But the sport chain has been much, much more for some time now. It means a new ability to attract travelers to the city. Hotels, which were already growing at a double-digit rate, which have sold out in recent weeks, not only in Fuorigrotta, the stadium district. In recent years, Naples has rediscovered a new centrality on the streets of tourism, but sport will certainly give another push: the numbers are difficult to calculate, certainly the presences linked to winning the championship are very numerous, even only of those who were curious to see how the city was preparing, explains Pasquale Russo, president of Confcommercio Campania.

There is now a new economy that studies define as the economy of beauty, linked to places, sporting events, culture and history. It is precisely this type of event that generates new value. The Ifis group did some time ago with a very in-depth analysis: the sport system alone generates something like 96 billion euros in value, equal to 3.6% of gross domestic product. TV rights, transport, hotels, courses. An economy with an increasingly long supply chain. The Scudetto has another impact: it increases the value of the Napoli brand. The trademark of the city, its ability to be attractive. We also think of the fact that in recent years the city has become a film set for many productions, adds the president of Confcommercio Campania.

Just think of the Mare Fuori series, which tells of the fragility of the boys and girls of Nisida, but also of those who live that age without committing crimes. Here, the Scudetto becomes a huge mirror that makes the city lights reflect all over the world: We can consider it a great visibility multiplier, adds Russo. In a city with a solid industrial tradition, just think of the Hitachi trains (formerly Ansaldo) or the Prysmian cables that go all over the world or the Leonardo group, just to name a few. A further driving force could have been the stadium, if it had had a modern conception like the other plants in the world, he underlines. It could be the next visibility site, after the Scudetto: it would be the choice to make.
