With Bossi we didn’t need to “make peace”, because there was never a war. I got along well with him, even though I often had to convince him that my line was right and not his. I’m talking about Bossi until 2005 when he got sick and the magic circle began to form, which filtered all his relationships and his decisions. I remember what happened on the Pontida meadow when, in June 2012, during the Monti government, someone from the magic circle (and certainly not Bossi) hastily removed a banner placed by the militants, where it was written “Maroni Prime Minister”.

Not much changed, of course the disease that struck me is something that I do not neglect, making all the necessary treatments. I understood that politics with a lowercase “p” is not among the important things. I really have an intense relationship with some militants. I am also registered in the chat of the Varese section and this helps me to stay updated on the choices of the city councilors, given that we are in opposition.

You contested the slogan of the Northern League campaign: I believe. What relationship does it have with religion?

Salvini’s “creed” was an entirely political slogan, religion has nothing to do with it. My relationship with faith? Certainly in difficult moments some certainties fail and we think about it … it comes back to me when I was playing the organ in church ….

His was a notable political career: twice Minister of the Interior, president of Lombardy, secretary of the League in times of storm. Do you have something to reproach yourself with? Or would he do it all again?

If I look back I have nothing to reproach myself, I would do it all again. I have always put the utmost dedication, passion and honesty in holding all positions at the service of our beautiful country. And I really took a lot of satisfactions, which made me happy.

Why this book now?

The idea came to me after reading The missing president by Bill Clinton. An exciting thriller with many twists, which I really liked. Although the Italian Ministry of the Interior and the White House, the center of world power, are two different things, I wanted to commit myself to see if I could do something similar starting from my experience as a minister who travels the world. Thanks to the collaboration of Carlo Brambilla, it seems to me that I have succeeded.
