The polls for the elections in Molise closed at 3 pm. With the polls closed, the counting of the ballots has begun, from which the name of the new governor will emerge in the afternoon. Three candidates for governor: Roberto Gravina (5 Star Movement) supported by the centre-left coalition (six lists, including the Democratic Party), Francesco Roberti (Forza Italia) supported by the centre-right (seven lists) and finally Emilio Izzo, supported from the civic list ‘I don’t vote for the usual suspects’. At 11pm, the turnout was 33.99 percent of eligible voters. At the same time in the Regionals 5 years ago 52.16 percent had voted, but then they voted in just one day. Those entitled to vote are 327,805. Among these are 85,000 residents abroad. Citizens, in addition to the regional president, vote for the election of 20 regional councilors. In all, there are 393 sections in the 136 Municipalities.
Political examination
The voters called to the polls are therefore just over 300,000, yet the vote in Molise represents a test for both the centre-left and the centre-right. Pd and M5s present themselves together and can draw indications on the approval of the alliance. And for the government majority – even the outgoing one in the Region – it will be a way to record the internal balance between FdI and Lega and the weight of Forza Italia, in the first test of the polls after the disappearance of Silvio Berlusconi.

In this electoral campaign, the region has been traveled far and wide by many big names: Matteo Salvini has been there four times in a month and brought with him three other ministers: those of Education Giuseppe Valditara, of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti and the disability Alessandra Locatelli. The deputy premier and coordinator of Forza Italia Antonio Tajani also toured the region. And then there were the stops by Giuseppe Conte and Elly Schlein, complete with an aperitif in Campobasso with Verdi-Si’s ally Nicola Fratoianni. The main challenge is between the candidate of the progressive front, Roberto Gravina, M5S mayor of Campobassoand the centre-right one, iThe mayor of Termoli Francesco Roberti (Forza Italia).

At the last regionals – it was 2018, the blue won Donato DeToma – Forza Italia was the party with the most votes, with 9.4%, the League took 8.2% and the Brothers of Italy 4.4%. The M5s ran alone, with its own candidate, and took 31.6%. While the Democratic Party presented itself at the head of a centre-left coalition and as a party took 9%. A month earlier there had been the policies, which had led to the birth of the yellow-green government: the M5s had taken over 30% and the League had been the first center-right party with 17.3%. A scenario that five years later appears distorted, with Fdi first party in Italy and Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi.
The difficult Conte-Schlein alliance
The same debut of a coalition that holds together M5s, Pd and Verdi-Si marks the novelty. The goal of wresting the region from the center-right was not enough to get Conte and Schlein on the same stage for an electoral rally, but the decision to put the two symbols under the same name still represented a step. “I consider the dialogue with the Democratic Party almost natural – Conte said on his tour – then on some realities we manage to converge, in other cases, for local reasons, we are unable to create these premises”. In Molise there is the progressive alliance, but not the wide field that Schlein is aiming for. The Third Pole has in fact taken another path. Neither Action nor Italia viva have presented their own lists, but the Renzians support the center-right candidate Roberti.
