From Guangzhou Shipyard to Livorno. The journey of the new generation ferry of the Moby fleet has started sailing towards Italy after the delivery which took place in recent days from the Chinese shipyard. We are talking about the Moby Fantasy, the new flagship which, once it has arrived and docked in Italy, will begin to connect Livorno with Olbia. The new boat, under the command of the Genoese Captain Massimo Pinsolo, will in these days cross two oceans and the Suez Canal to then reach the Tyrrhenian Sea and start operating from the end of June.

The flagship of the group

It is, as the company explains, the spearhead of the group. The vessel, which cost around 160 million euros, has a length of 237 metres, a width of 32 and a gross tonnage of 69,500 tons, as well as benefiting from a capacity of 3,000 passengers and 3,850 linear meters of rolling cargo is considered, for the segment it covers, «the largest passenger ferry ever built worldwide».

To give added value to the vessel halfway between a cruise ship and a passenger ferry, equipped with 400 cabins and on-board services as well as two bars, a bistro, an à la carte restaurant and then an area dedicated to children, are « the high standards of sustainability adopted also make it the most avant-garde and technologically sophisticated ferry with respect to environmental protection and the reduction of emissions”.

Sustainability and low emissions

During the planning and in the phases that then led to the realization, attention was given to the issue of emissions and therefore to environmental issues. «Moby Fantasy was designed according to the highest standards of sustainability by adopting cutting-edge equipment and technologies that aim at protecting the environment and the energy and ecological transition with the aim of reducing emissions as much as possible – the group further clarify -. The new green flagship is the first ferry in the world to obtain EEDI3 certification with savings in terms of emissions of over 50% compared to traditional ferries used on similar lines”.

The engine power is 10.8 megawatts, for a cruising speed of 23.5 knots, with peaks of 25 knots. The ferry can then switch from traditional fuel to LNG liquefied natural gas, the cleanest fuel in the industry.
