after the European Council

The premier held a press conference from Brussels: “The interests of Italy and France can collide”. And on biofuels: “There is no defeat for Italy”

He says the meeting with Emmanuel Macron last night’s was “long and wide-ranging scenery”. And that on the part of the French president there was “a willingness to collaborate on the migration issue, tackling it in a structural way”. Giorgia Meloni held a press point from Brussels on the sidelines of the European Council. The prime minister said that the bilateral summit, which she said she was “very satisfied with”, showed how “the interests of Italy and France can collide”. In this regard, he announced a mission to Tunisia, another point of agreement with the French president, who shortly before had spoken of the need to help the North African country in order to block its migratory flows. On this point, Meloni called for an agreement between the Tunisian government and the International Monetary Fund, whose urgency he has been supporting for some time.

Meloni also spoke of the banking crisis triggered by the Svb and Credit Suisse cases: “There is no concern, we have solid fundamentals”, he said.

Another issue Meloni received questions from the press about was biofuels. “I believe that the game on biofuels is not lost, the one on technological neutrality is won”, replied the prime minister. “Our goal is to demonstrate that biofuels respect zero emissions. Compared to the initial text, the work that is being done is already a victory. Does Germany win? It’s an imperfect read. They work for chemical fuels and want the necessary checks to be done. We are doing the same on biofuels. That’s why there is a convergence of interests.”

Regarding the reform of the Mes Meloni said that the bailout fund “is a kind of Cassation, first and second degree. The reference to governance is no coincidence. The work must be done upstream, not downstream.” On the hypothetical risks on the Pnrr, now that we are approaching the March 31 deadline to disburse the new tranche of European aid, Meloni said that “there is a collaborative work with the European Commission. They appreciate the serious work that Italy is doing from this point of view”.

Meloni was asked about internal issues if there were tensions with the League over the appointments. “No, we are working very seriously. The reconstructions are very amusing. They are companies that are very important for our system and credibility. The discussions in progress look solely at the merits”, she declared. While on the controversies regarding the memory of the Fosse Ardeatine massacre (this morning the premier had spoken of “Italians” killed, not of anti-fascists) the premier cut short: “Anti-fascists are Italian”.
