Meloni, what's behind the trip to Prague: the premier is working on the marriage between the EPP and the Conservatives in view of the Europeans

Giorgia Meloni flies to Prague to meet her Czech counterpart Petr Fiala. On the bilateral table of this 10 May there is obviously the Ukrainian crisis, the migrant emergency, economic and energy convergences. But there is also a much more political issue that needs to be highlighted and on which Meloni is working, more or less under the radar, even before arriving at Palazzo Chigi and which now, one year before the European elections to be held next spring has become a priority: to build the foundations to bring about the marriage between the EPP and the Conservatives, the right-wing group to which the Fdi belongs, as well as the Civic Democratic Party of which Fiala is the leader and which currently sees in the Poles of Law and Justice, the movement led by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki the largest number of deputies.

The axis with Poles and Czechs

A prospect that is anything but unrealistic taking into account the number of parliamentarians that the Fdi could have in one year compared to the current 9 and which, paradoxically, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has strengthened given that Poles and Czechs together with the Balts are the main supporters of the defense of Kiev as well as Italy led by Meloni and represent the most faithful interpreters of the line pursued by Washington and London. The confirmation also came on the occasion of the face-to-face meeting at the end of April between Meloni and the British premier Rishi Sunak, who is also the leader of the Tories who, before Brexit and farewell to Strasbourg, were the most substantial squad of the group of Conservatives.

The missions in Iceland and Japan

It’s a canvas that still needs many threads to complete. But Meloni has already shown that he is patient in tackling takeovers and attention to international relations is a determining part of it. After London and Prague, the prime minister will travel first to Reykiavjk next week for the Council of Europe and then from there she will fly directly to Japan where the G7 will be held in Hiroshima, during which the trip for the United States at the moment generically indicated for late June early July.

The EU Council at the end of June

Also at the end of June, the European Council will also be held, from which the Italian government expects a concrete and visible step on the management of the migrant emergency destined to grow in the summer months with the further multiplication of landings. In fact, Brussels remains the decisive hub. And not only on migrants. The discussion on the new rules of the stability pact is at a crossroads while in the meantime work is being done on the restyling of the Pnrr which will have to be examined by the Commission. A complex puzzle made even more slippery by the approach to the electoral test.

The most important piece: maintaining internal consensus

The attention dedicated to Brussels (the initial meeting with the EU leaders who have just taken office in Palazzo Chigi) in parallel with the strengthening of relations with the EPP led by the Bavarian Manfred Weber and with the president of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola are some of the building blocks on which Meloni continues to be focused. The most important and decisive, however, remains for the prime minister the maintenance of the appeal, of the internal consensus gained so far, which sees her Brothers in Italy, according to polls, close to 30%. It is the sine qua non to be able to weigh in the present and above all future choices on the tables that count.
