“Italy has played a leading role, I am satisfied with the conclusions of the European Council. Flexibility on European funds is good. The agreement on Tunisia? A model for North Africa”, says the premier

“Poland and Hungary are never disappointed by those who defend their national interests”, said Giorgia Meloni, on the sidelines of the European Council. After a morning spent trying to mediate and soften the position of the Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, and the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, on the European agreement for migrants. An attempt that failed, so much so that the migration chapter was not included in the conclusions of the European Council.

With respect to the other fronts of discussion, the prime minister said she was “satisfied” because “Italy played a leading role”, she explained during the press briefing on the sidelines of the summit’s proceedings. “The flexibility on funds is good”, Meloni said again, underlining how this was one of the themes posed by Palazzo Chigi. No problem, he assures on the Pnrr and on the third installment: “The situation is not getting worse”.

Particularly important, for Meloni, was the result achieved on Tunisia, a theme addressed by the EU in the chapter of conclusions referring to external relations and not to that on migrants (later removed due to the Polish-Hungarian veto): “The work on Tunisia is a model” to be taken as an example in relations with other North African countries.
