The premier in the invaded country close to the recurrence of the conflict. Mattarella: “Aid serves to end the war, not feed it”

After a few days of indiscretions, with a trip that seemed imminent and which instead seems postponed for reasons of agenda and security, Giorgia Meloni has decided that she will go to Kiev close to theanniversary of the outbreak of warprobably a few days before February 24th.

The Prime Minister’s trip to the Ukrainian capital will be there second visit by an Italian head of government in Kiev after the one carried out by Mario Draghi, together with Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz, on 16 June. At the time, the trip was symbolic because it brought together three heads of government from the first three economies of the European Union and brought Zelensky the gift green light to the procedure for accession to the Union itself.

Giorgia Meloni’s visit, on the other hand, will be dedicated to continuity, on the Italian side: a posture that the head of government has demonstrated to the Ukrainian authorities since the first contacts after taking office. A continuity that has declined in the first place not only in the clear Italian placement between the countries that support the reasons of Kiev, but also among those who continue to send conspicuous military aid, coordinated at an international level.

A position for which Meloni has been thanked several times by the Ukrainian premierwho defined the Italian military aid as “substantial” and who claimed to have immediately had a direct relationship with Giorgia Meloni based on mutual transparency and trust, as it was with Mario Draghi.

Even in recent days the contacts and exchanges of messages between the two prime ministers have not ceased. Meloni could match the visit to Kiev the acceptance of an invitation that does not yet have a certain date but which has arrived since Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Jakub Morawiecki. The idea is to bring together the three heads of government who belong to the European conservative party in Warsaw. It would be a purely political appointment, it could be held the week following that of the European Council, scheduled for 9 and 10 February in Brussels.

Member of the far-right Law and Justice party, Morawiecki therefore invited both Giorgia Melon to Warsawthe that Petr Fialaleader of the Civic Democratic Party since 2014 and head of government of the Czech Republic since 2021. If the appointment is confirmed, Meloni, as all the politicians who have been to Kiev have done, could arrive on the border between Poland and Ukraine to then continue the journey aboard the night train which arrives the next morning.

Yesterday the head of state intervened on the conflict Sergio Mattarella with few but very clear words about the meaning of our military aid for the Ukrainian resistance. Ours, as well as those of all the states which, coordinated by the United States, are part of a coalition that exceeds the figure of 40 countries: «The political, economic and military support for Ukraine and the sanctions against Russia are functional to cease the war, not fuel it», declared Mattarella, receiving Katalin Novák, president of Hungary who today will also be received at Palazzo Chigi by Giorgia Meloni.
