Meloni in Reykjavik for the Council of Europe: support for Kyiv at the centre

Giorgia Meloni fly to Iceland to participate in the summit of the Council of Europe which will take place between today and tomorrow in Reykjavik with 46 heads of state and government: Russia will not be included, expelled from the international organization on 16 March last year following the invasion of Ukraine. What begins today will be just the fourth meeting in the history of the Council of Europe: created in 1949, the last summit dates back to 2005.
At the center of the five round tables planned there will be support for Ukrainein the presence of the leader Volodymyr Zelensky: at the end of the sessions, it will be established a record of damage caused by Russian aggression in Ukrainian territories. An objective with a strong symbolic value, to confirm full support for the cause of Kyiv, but also with important consequences in the context of supranational justice: the intention is to ascertain Russian crimes committed starting from 24 February 2022 to thus ensure a fair economic compensation to Ukraine.
But, in addition to the official program, for Giorgia Meloni it will also be an opportunity to see the French president again Emmanuel Macron, after the tensions of the last few weeks. No bilateral is foreseen, but it is reasonable to expect that behind the scenes the two heads of government will have the opportunity to confront each other.
The prime minister will speak this afternoon in one of the five round tables, entitled “Confronting the challenges deriving from the new emerging human rights”. You will then leave for Japan for the G7, where, among others, the French president will still be waiting for you.
