Meloni at the Council of Europe: a register on the damages of Moscow on the table. Possible meeting with Macron

Giorgia Meloni will arrive in Reykjavík this afternoon to participate in the work of the Council of Europe. At the center of the summit will be Ukraine and the effects caused by the Russian invasion through the establishment of a real register of the damages suffered by Kiev for the purpose of reconstruction and the attribution of economic responsibility for the disaster caused by the war desired by Vladimir Putin. The title of the summit is explanatory: “United around our values”.
A summit with 46 heads of state
Together with the Italian premier there will be 46 heads of state and government including the main European leaders: from the British Rishi Sunak to the French president Emmanuel Macron, from the German chancellor Olaf Scholz to the president of the European commission Ursula von der Leyen to Volodymyr Zelensky himself who last Saturday was Rome, the first stop on his European tour.
Fourth meeting since 1949
What will be held between today and tomorrow is the fourth summit in the history of the Council of Europe which, unlike the European Council, is not part of the EU but is an autonomous international organization founded in 1949 with the aim of promoting democracy, protecting human rights and the rule of law, of which Russia was a part a year ago and from which Moscow was expelled after the invasion of Ukraine.
An international special tribunal on aggression
On the agenda, in addition to the presentation of the international register of damages (on which the United States and Japan are also expected to join), also support for the establishment of a special international tribunal on aggression. European leaders will reaffirm their common commitment to the core values of the council whose purpose is precisely to promote democracy, human rights, European cultural identity and the search for solutions to social problems.
Meloni’s intervention
Meloni will arrive at the Harpa concert Hall in Reykjavík in the afternoon around 5 pm (7 pm in Italy), just before the beginning of the works. There will be five round tables at the same time. The Italian premier will speak at the one dedicated to contrasting the challenges deriving from the new emerging human rights. The next day Meloni will fly directly to Japan to participate in the G7 in Hiroshima. In one of these two international appointments, the summit with French President Macron announced in recent days by the Elysée would also be held.
