The government: ban light cannabis to minors

After “days of controversy”, also fueled by his declarations, the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, makes his profession of an ancient liberal: “The phrase attributed now to Croce, now to Voltaire, now to an unknown author, so” I don’t have your ideas but I will fight to the death so that you can support them” is the Gospel. In my life I have changed my mind about many things but never about the liberal idea». Almost a truce, compared to the tones of the past few days. But justice continues to be debated.

Also because Nordio’s latest statements, during a conference in Milan two days ago, had opened a new front, after the controversy over the crackdown on wiretapping and the repeal of abuse of office: that of the announced tax reform. Even the entrepreneur who wanted to pay up to the last penny – was the sense of the public reasoning of the minister – would still risk some violation due to the contradictory nature of the rules. In the new sanctioning system, therefore, “the inspiring principle”, explains the minister, must be “conciliatory justice which consists in bringing the parties to an agreement when there is no need for severe repression”.

Yesterday the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella has pronounced clear words regarding tax fairness. The occasion was a meeting with the commander of the Guardia di Finanza, Andrea De Gennaro. “Yours is an important contribution to the implementation of the constitutional principles of tax justice among citizens, so that everyone provides his contribution to the community as required by our Constitution”. The head of state also underlined the delicate role of the yellow flames: “The Guardia di Finanza has always established itself as a secure garrison of legality, as a faithful guarantor of the economic security of our country”.

Against Nordio’s words on the taxman, the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, had expressed concern: «The minister let us understand – he said yesterday in the Chamber where the Pnrr was discussed – if the line of the Meloni government is to use the club on the poor and caress the tax evaders, because we don’t agree.” Immediate reply from the center-right: “In our country – articulates Giorgio Mulè, vice president of the Camera di Forza Italia – citizens have to deal with a jungle where the error for taxpayers is always around the corner and with the reversal of burden of proof on citizens. We are very far from having a fair taxation». Meanwhile, the constant defense continues, especially by Forza Italia and Fratelli d’Italia, of the justice reform approved by the Council of Ministers. The Deputy Minister of Justice, the Italian Francesco Paolo Sisto, explains the crackdown on wiretapping with an example: “If the reform is approved, acts such as the guarantee notice delivered to Silvio Berlusconi in December 1994 and made known by the Courierwould not be publishable”. Sisto also relaunches the separation of careers, a staple of Forza Italia: «It is contained in the Constitution. Article 104 says that the judiciary is autonomous and independent but article 111 states that only the third judge is truly impartial. Anyone who is against it is against the Constitution.”

For the government and party colleague, Maria Elisabetta Casellati, “the justice reform reconciles the needs of investigations with the right to privacy, blocks the diffusion of wiretaps that have ruined the lives of many”. But also from the Democratic Party the provision, in the part concerning wiretapping, receives applause: that of Vincenzo De Luca, controversial, however, with the criticisms expressed by his party mate and former minister Andrea Orlando. «You claim that it was decided to have a confidential archive of the wiretaps. And what happens if that confidentiality is violated? Nothing, confirming the stupidity, cowardice and extraneousness to real life that these politicians have: they are dead souls», decrees the governor of Campania.

Finally another chapter: with a government amendment to the fiscal delegation, being examined in the Finance Committee in the Chamber, the sale of light cannabis to minors is prohibited, and taxation is equalized to that of cigarettes. «The government kills the light cannabis trade in the bud», disputes Riccardo Magi of +Europe.
