«A young Republic found itself having to deal with political terrorism; with massacres, sometimes carried out with the complicity of men from whom the State and citizens expected defense. We still feel the pressing need to know the full truth,” said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, this morning on the occasion of the celebration at the Quirinale of the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Terrorism.

Celebrations that began with Mattarella placing a wreath of flowers in via Caetani, in front of the plaque commemorating the sacrifice of the Honorable Aldo Moro. The commemoration ceremony conducted by Valentina Cervi and opened by a film made by Rai Storia was then held at the Quirinale. Present, with family members and representatives of the associations of victims of terrorism, the president of the Senate Ignazio La Russa and the prime minister Giorgia Meloni.

Mattarella’s closing speech: “Our democracy feeds on tolerance, patience, discussion, respect”

«Hatred and violence constitute the path of authoritarian regimes. They represent the failure of humanity, a call to freedom and mutual respect – said President Mattarella in his closing speech -. The Republic has been able to produce its antibodies, knowing full well that a climate of violent confrontation, words of hatred, the adversary transformed into an enemy to be overthrown, constitute pathological modalities of political dispute which, today as then, must be condemned and decisively rejected » because, he insisted, «the democracy of our Republic is nourished by tolerance, patience, discussion, respect».
