Mattarella in Norway, a leading country on the opposite fronts of oil and renewables

Energy and renewables, as well as a survey on how the war in Ukraine is perceived in one of the most active countries of the so-called Scandinavian bloc. These are the objectives of a state visit by the President of the Republic to Norway. Sergio Mattarella will arrive in Oslo on May 10 together with his daughter Laura. The official visit will start on the 11th and will continue on the 12th with a stop in the north of the country in Trondheim.

Norway is a very interesting country for geopolitics: it is not part of the European Union but it is an important member of the Atlantic Alliance. But it is above all attractive for being a large oil extractor and, at the same time, a leading country in the production of renewables. In fact, Norway has a 95% renewable electricity grid powered mainly by hydroelectricity. The country has invested heavily in recent years in building a solid domestic supply of renewable sources, including onshore and offshore wind energy.
The program of the visit
Europe therefore, with the Ukraine crisis and the need to reorient supplies from Russia, is paying close attention to the choices of the Scandinavian country. Mattarella, at the invitation of King Harald V and Queen Sonja, will be in Oslo for talks that will strengthen the already close relationship between the two countries. The program includes, on 11 May, the welcome ceremony in the square of the Royal Palace, followed by the laying of a wreath at the Akershus fortress and a visit to Parliament. Then Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store will host Mattarella for a working lunch. The day ends with a gala dinner at the Royal Palace.
Cooperation in the field of energy transition
The following day, Crown Prince Haakon will accompany Mattarella to Trondheim. The program – confirmed despite the recent hospitalization of the sovereign for tests – is centered on opportunities for cooperation in the field of energy transition with particular attention to hydrogen, wind energy and carbon capture and storage. The issues related to the green future will be the main course of the second stage of the Head of State’s mission. At the Trondheim Polytechnic he will in fact visit the energy laboratory and participate in a conference on energy. The head of state will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
