«The world has become a single community, ever closer, interconnected, gathered within itself. This must be noted.” These are the words pronounced by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, at the inauguration of the academic year of the University of Ferrara. The Head of State said that “the differences in demographic trends and in the distribution of well-being and wealth that were once absorbed within local territories, in large regions but within each continent, separately, today are not exhausted by being absorbed within the local scope but they have inevitable repercussions in every part of the world and we register it every day».

For the Head of State, if we think that Africa, in 20-30 years, “will have a population between 3-4 times that of the whole of Europe, we realize how these are the scenarios that need to be tackled, they are totally new scenarios which require a commitment to study, application, totally new initiatives. It’s a condition that really requires a deepening that we don’t always register. In our world – adds Mattarella – these conditions of change are sometimes perceived as distant strangers».

The president went on to add: «These new scenarios make us understand how out of time and history the behaviors of the power of past centuries lead to wars of aggression to annex territories or to fierce competitions on marginal aspects. These are the relevant aspects that will mark the future world. The world is called to reflect on this. And universities must be the vanguard in this reflection, which have this vocation of reflecting in order to explore scenarios and indicate paths with which to tackle them. This is the world that young people face, this is the world that universities must help them interpret and govern».
