The former foreign minister returns to be seen in public. He will be at the Economic Forum to participate in a series of events: “Very happy to be there as a friend of Ukraine,” he says. An activism that is intertwined with the appointment as EU special envoy in the Persian Gulf which is still at stake

He hadn’t been seen at a public event, and of this magnitude, for a few months now, that is, since he gave up his role as foreign minister, sipping attendance and appearances. But today, Louis DiMaio, will again appear in public: “I will be happy to be there as a friend of Ukraine. The Ukrainians deserve all our support”. He will do it on the international stage of Davos to take part in a series of events whose main theme is support for Ukraine. And on the other hand, as head of the Farnesina, the former Grillino leader was also in Ukraine, meeting Zelensky, and played a leading role in relations between Rome and Kyiv and in supporting the invaded country.

And it is in this capacity, for what he has done in the past months, that he has been invited to the Economic Forum which annually brings together the world’s top economic experts together with heads of state, ministers and high-ranking diplomats. While the most important faces of the Italian government who preferred to avoid the summit will not be present.

Luigi Di Maio will take part in the gala dinner of the “Friends of Ukraine”, scheduled for tonight and should participate in another meeting which will see the wife of the Ukrainian president Olena Zelenska as protagonists. “We can say that the Ukrainians have changed us much more than they have changed themselves”, wrote Di Maio a few days ago, precisely on these pages, recognizing the ability of the Ukrainian resistance to compact the western front, for which the position of the community international “now it is much clearer than before”.

The former minister claimed his own work, and that of the Draghi government, re-launching the need to continue to support the defense of the invaded country. Di Maio’s speech ended with the words: “Thank you Ukraine”a thank you that explains a lot about his presence in Switzerland.

But perhaps not all. Because the diplomatic activism of the former foreign minister is intertwined with that appointment as special envoy of the EU in the Persian Gulf which at the moment remains in the background, but is still at stake. A position for which Mario Draghi also seems to have spent himself, indicating the name of Luigi Di Maio. And it is obvious, especially in this phase, how the appreciation of Kyiv, and even more the recognition of the international community of the commitment put in place by the founder Impegno Civico represent an important visiting card. Perhaps essential to become a European ambassador.
