Leader, government and supplementary: after the mourning, Forza Italia reorganizes itself

Antonio Tajani pro tempore president of Forza Italia, up to the European Championships. The hypothesis is gaining ground in the party, where after the days of pain we begin to think in a very concrete way about the reorganization after the death of Silvio Berlusconi. A press conference convened today at noon will serve to illustrate the formal path, in part adhering to the procedures indicated by the Statute.

The shared drive for “continuity”

The decision to promote the deputy premier to the top, explain qualified Fi sources, “is not contestable” as he is the most senior appointed by Berlusconi, and at this moment “continuity” is needed. And majority parliamentary sources ensure that the turning point has already been announced at Palazzo Chigi. By Statute, in a case such as the death of the president, the Presidential Committee should “immediately” convene the National Council for the “temporary replacement” and “for the period strictly necessary for the convocation of the National Congress”, which has among the tasks the election of the president.

Not seen mergers in the majority

Only guesses are still being made about the timing of the appointment, but they should be brief. While the idea is widespread that Tajani – now national coordinator – will remain at the top at least until the European elections in spring 2024. That is the horizon beyond which the hypothesis of a single center-right party could materialize. “Combining the FdI and Fi parties is not on the agenda – clarified the president of the Senate Ignazio La Russa, to SkyTg24 – and it may not be a positive fact in Italy, mergers have never gone well, nor the socialist one , nor that of the PDL and not even some in the left area ».

Thirty years of undisputed leadership

Meanwhile, eyes on Forza Italia. Also by statute, the National Congress is the first body of the party, it should meet at least every 3 years, but it has only happened twice since 1994. In fact, this part of the Statute has never been taken into consideration in the almost thirty years of leadership undisputed by Berlusconi, who also supported his political creation economically with around 100 million euros. And even now it is not considered a dogma, in a party dominated by uncertainty and one great fear, the diaspora. Also for this reason, we reason in blue circles, the press conference, 48 hours after Berlusconi’s funeral, serves to give a concrete signal: the activity goes on.

Some potential fears in the Senate

In the headquarters in Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina, in addition to Tajani, there will be the group leaders of the Senate and Chamber Licia Ronzulli and Paolo Barelli, and the head of the blue delegation to the European Parliament Fulvio Martusciello. Even if the fibrillation is always latent, on the eve of the considerations are almost unequivocal: the direction in which we must aim, now more than ever, is that of management in the name of maximum possible involvement. Nothing can be more harmful than hysteria or divisive choices, which could unleash some disgruntled people to change sides. Maintaining the status quo is also the concern of Giorgia Meloni, as well as the common intent strengthened with Tajani and Gianni Letta, right-hand man of Berlusconi until the end. More than in the Chamber, where the center-right has 237 deputies (44 from Fi) out of 400, it is the Senate that creates some potential fears: without Berlusconi, the majority is 115 out of 200 (not counting the senators for life).
