Justice, Nordio: politics does not give in to the pressures of the judiciary on the laws

ROME. «The magistrate cannot criticize the laws as the politician cannot criticize the sentences. He is inadmissible.” This was stated by the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, speaking of the relationship between the two powers. “Unhealthy relationship? I wouldn’t say so – he replies – but it was very conflictual right from the beginning of the “Clean Hands” operation, in which I too participated, because between 1992 and 1994 I investigated the entire Venetian part of Tangentopoli ».

While the government accelerates on the justice reform to increase the guarantees of the suspects (the CDM meets at 6 pm to kick off the first part of the reform desired by the minister), Nordio once again underlines the boundaries between the judiciary and politics.

The abuse of office

Responding to the words of the Calabrian prosecutor, he adds: «I am amazed that a magistrate speaks of a spy crime and admits that this crime was useless, because there were very few convictions. I would like to teach this colleague that there is or is not a crime, you can’t look after it. The abuse of office is so evanescent and full of damages, admitted by all Italian administrators, including representatives of the Democratic Party, that despite having been changed it has always continued to bring pernicious consequences, consisting of entries in the register of suspects, the dissemination of information guarantee also in the press, from the delegitimization of many political figures who have also seen their political careers compromised, only to end up in nothing”.

Nordio sees it as “a tribute to his battle for a more just justice”, but with regret for the Cavaliere who “can no longer witness the first step towards a radical reform of justice in the guaranteeist sense that he hoped for”.
