Of Claudio Bozza

The former prime minister and the conspicuous black ring in the Senate: “Monitor all vital parameters: now I’m starting to train”. Lotito’s gaffe in front of Scalfarotto: “Matteo did you cross over to the other side?”

At Palazzo Madama the vote is underway for the choice of lay members of the CSM. Tempers are quite heated, because things didn’t go smoothly right away. In the middle of the Senate hemicycle Matteo Renzi meets Claudio Lotito, president of Lazio, known for his colorful language. The Forza Italia senator’s eye falls on the hand of the former prime minister, who has a showy black ring on his finger: «Ahò, but what did you pass me on the other bank?», exclaims Lotito. It’s a pity that Ivan Scalfarotto was at Renzi’s side: «Look at Claudio, you’ve got the “other side” right here in front of you», he replies, smiling. The senator of Italia viva, former undersecretary, always at the forefront of homosexual rights, in May 2017 was the first member of an Italian government to marry his partner Federico, just after the Renzi executive had approved the law on civil unions. “Yes, it was a homophobic joke, but I’m a man of the world, I didn’t get upset – Scalfarotto tells the Courier -, if anything, I noticed a discreet embarrassment on the part of Lotito, who tried to justify himself, apologizing».

Renzi witnessed the scene and then added to dilute: «Don’t worry, Lotito, this is a smart wedding ring, which, connected to the smartphone, records all the vital parameters, it’s not that Agnese gave it to me to keep me under control». The “black faith” sported by Renzi was really given to him by his wife. The reason? The former premier has just made one of his impossible bets: being able to do the triathlon before the age of 50. And not in the lightest version, but in the “Olympic” version: 10 km of running, 40 km of cycling and 1.5 km of swimming. «I have just turned 48 and therefore by 2024 I can do it. The head counts anyway », the senator from Florence told his friends. The tech ring measures all your vitals during sleep and during physical activity, how much and how you sleep, as well as calories burned. The former premier would already have a training plan in mind, which will have to start with a diet: “When I’m fine I fluctuate between 81-82 kilos – he recently said in an interview with Natalia Aspesi -, but when I’m out of shape I can get to 90. I can eat too much or not at all, I’m bulimic, like in politics ». The gauntlet is therefore launched, with Renzi hoping to return to the glories of 2010 and 2011, when as mayor, before landing at Palazzo Chigi, he completed two marathons in Florence, closing respectively with: 4 hours and 40 minutes and 4 hours and 9 minutes.
