Italgas diversifies in the water sector. The group has started exclusive negotiations with Veolia in view of the possible acquisition of shares in some water companies in Lazio, Campania and Sicily. Targeted are 100% Acqua, which directly controls 98.5% of Idrosicilia and indirectly 75% of Siciliacque, 100% of Idrolatina, which controls approximately 49% of Acqualatina, and 47.9% of Acqua Campania . “The operation – explains Italgas – is part of the broader strategy outlined in the 2022-2028 Strategic Plan which provides for the strengthening of the Group’s presence in the water sector”.

Siciliacque controls about 2,000 kilometers of water network and covers over 30% of the island’s population. Acqualatina is the manager of the integrated water service in Ato 4 of Southern Lazio, which includes 38 Municipalities for a catchment area of 550,000 inhabitants, while Acqua Campania is the manager of the Western Campania Aqueduct under concession from the Campania Region, with overall catchment area of around 4 million inhabitants.

Italgas has been aiming for the water sector for some time with the aim of modernizing the network. The group’s objective is to apply the same digitization measures already successfully tested in the gas sector to the water sector. A series of measures to enhance infrastructure maintenance and thus reduce system losses. This becomes even more important in light of the water crisis that has hit Italy as a result of climate change.
