Constant appreciation for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and for the government. The 5 Star Movement under 18%, the Third Pole goes down. FdI returns to 31%, Lega (+0.3%) and Forza Italia (+0.6%) are also growing. Abstentions and undecideds rise: they are at 41.5%

The month of February was full of important events, starting with the Regionals in Lombardy and Lazio – won as expected by the centre-right – which resulted in a substantial holding of Lega and Forza Italia without significantly changing the balance of power between the parties of the government majority, thus avoiding the risk of increasing internal tensions.

On the opposite front, the primaries of the Democratic Party held the stage above all for the election of the new secretary. And during the month there were events that caused discussion, sometimes radicalising opinions: the hunger strike of the anarchist Alfredo Cospito against the custody regime provided for by article 41 bis (with the annexed Donzelli-Delmastro case), Berlusconi’s acquittal in the Ruby ter trialinterventions on the Superbonus.

In the background, the economic picture turned out to be substantially better than expected, with the slowdown in inflation, the containment of the cost of gas and fuel and, more generally, the disappearance of the possibility of entering a recession.

On the international front, concern is growing over the war in Ukraine, both for the economic consequences and for the risk of extension of the conflict, as well as the opposition to the sending of weapons, as we saw in the survey published on Friday in Corriere.

What impact has this articulated and complex scenario had on citizens’ opinions? The judgments onexecutive come on Giorgia Meloni remain exactly at the same levels recorded at the end of January, with an approval rating of respectively 51 and 53. Two elements that have accompanied the executive since its inauguration are therefore confirmed: appreciation is expressed by a significantly higher percentage than the electoral pool of the majority parties and the substantial polarization of assessments (the 45% speaks positively against the 43% of opposite opinion).

The approval rating of the premier (53) almost plebiscitary among the voters of his party (97), remains on very high values among the allies of the League (86) and FI (74)while among the opposition parties it obtains a higher index among the voters of Third pole (53) respect to dem (24), ai 5 Stars (24) and to the voters ofGreen-Left Alliance (14). Unlike her predecessor, the prime minister struggles to gain consensus among abstentionists (who represent the relative majority of voters), in fact the approval rating stands at 37 (against 55 of Dragons).

The voting guidelines show a further increase of centre-right (+1.6%) which is attested to 48.2%, the highest result since January of last year. All the majority parties register a positive sign, in particular Forza Italia (+0.6%) which is reported above 7% And FdI (+0.5%) which touches the 31%. Among the political forces of the opposition the Pd with the 17% registers an increase (+0.6%)while the M5S (17.5%)The Third pole (6%) and theGreen-Left Alliance (3.5%) back compared to a month ago. The share of those who intend to abstain or are undecided remains very high (41.5%). As for the popularity of the leaders, With you (approval index equal to 30) while maintaining the lead in the standings, loses 2 points and is followed by Salvinistable a 28. The difference between the M5S leader and the Northern League leader is reduced from 7 to 2 points in three months. Also noteworthy is the two-point drop in Calenda (19) and Renzi (13) presumably due to the lower than expected election result.

In all evidence, the result of the Regionals reverberates on the voting guidelines and on the liking of the leaders, rewarding the winners and penalizing the losers. The centre-right strengthens on the wave of the clear victory in Lombardy and Lazio and in the presence of an opposition that has never been so divided. The Democratic Party, which emerged unscathed from the Regionals, climbs back thanks to the debate on the primaries and reduces the distance from the M5S, while the Third Pole, which had bet heavily on the candidacy of Letizia Moratti in Lombardy, scores a setback.

The events of February do not seem to have had any effect on the consensus for the executive and the prime minister, which remains stable thanks above all to the basic choices adopted so far, from international alliances to the relationship with the European Union, from attention to public finances to the implementation of the Pnrr. These are choices in continuity with the recent past which reassure most citizens and mitigate the strong political connotation evoked by many but which so far has been limited to a few initiatives of symbolic value or to the declarations of some ministers or parliamentarians of the majority.
